10 Steps for the Perfect At-Home Facial

While this past year has caused many of us to make alterations to our lives – there’s no reason your skin should suffer the consequences. If you’re not getting in to see your esthetician regularly, an at-home facial is a great way to maintain your skin health and gift yourself some much-needed TLC.

Before you get started… here are a couple of tips to make note of before you begin:

  • Ideally, facials should be done at night, when your skin is beginning to actively repair itself.
  • Due to the precision and expertise required, extractions are not encouraged.
  • Do not attempt a chemical peel because if done incorrectly can lead to pigment irregularities and can even scar your skin permanently.

Make sure your hair is off your face and secured with a headband or towel. Apply an oil cleanser to ensure all makeup and residue is off your skin. Rinse with warm water and a washcloth. We like using the Stone Crop Cleansing Oil because not only does it feel and smell luxurious, it removes makeup from your skin and eyes all in one step!

Double Cleanse

Double cleansing is a great practice, especially if you have oily skin. When you double cleanse with an oil-based cleanser first, it allows all the dirt, grime, and makeup buildup to be broken down so that the second cleanser, more suited to your skin type, can really cleanse and treat the skin. Massage in your favorite cleanser for 1 – 3 minutes before rinsing with warm water. If you don’t have a preferred cleanser we recommend taking our skin quiz to find the perfect cleanser for your skin.

Apply your favorite toner by generously spraying your face or applying with a cotton pad. We recommend the Stone Crop Hydrating Mist

Cover your face with a towel and steam your face over a bowl of hot steamy water for 2 minutes at a time for up to 10 minutes. We know this may seem silly and a bit intimidating, but when you steam your face it allows your pores to expand, making it easier for any buildup to be extracted from your skin.

Gently exfoliate the skin with a physical exfoliant, such as a the Charcoal Exfoliating Gel Cleanser or a chemical exfoliant with AHAs, BHAs or lactic acid. We recommend the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant.

Acne Tip: We recommend you use a gentle chemical exfoliant rather than a physical exfoliant. A good choice may be the Clear Skin Willow Bark Exfoliating Peel or the Firm Skin Acai Exfoliating Peel for more mature or dry skin.

Apply a thin layer of a masque and leave on your 5 – 10 minutes (or however long the product instructs you) then rinse. Our favorite masque right now, in the spirit of Valentine’s day, is the Chocolate Mousse Hydration Masque.

Acne Tip: We recommend using a masque that has tea tree oil, charcoal, clay and/or salicylic acid for optimal results. Our Clear Skin Probiotic Masque has both tea tree oil and clay within to deliver a clear and radiant complexion.

Use a facial oil or moisturizer to massage your face for 5 – 10 minutes, then rinse away excess with warm water and a washcloth. An Acupressure Gua Sha Spoon would work perfectly for this step.

Acne Tip: Apply one or two drops of Facial Recovery Oil directly to cleansed skin. Clary sage oil helps to calm and balance oil production. Olive oil soothes and deeply hydrates, while sage leaf extract and ylang ylang offers cleansing properties to keep pores purified. Massage oil in gently with a Gua Sha stone!

Apply a small amount of serum and massage in circles across your face. We just love the Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Serum for an extra boost of long-lasting exfoliation and hydration.

Eye Cream

Apply eye cream in gentle blending motions underneath and around your eyes paying special attention to any crows feet. We love the Neroli Age Corrective Eye Serum.

Apply a thin layer of hydrating moisture to your face to soothe your skin. If you haven’t already, take our skin quiz to find out which moisturizer would best suit your skin type and your skin concerns.
