Four Signs Your Gut Health Is off and Four Delicious Recipes to Boost Your Glow

March is National Nutrition Month, so we thought now would be the perfect opportunity to talk about how looking good and feeling good starts from within. Read on to see if your gut health may be off, and what you can do to get your glow on!

Did you know that almost all skin conditions are linked to your gut? In simplest terms, the connection between your gut and your skin is known as the gut-skin-axis. This axis acts as an information highway through the microbiome, the ecosystem of bacteria, fungi and yeasts that live in your gut. These bugs—otherwise known as microbes—are like microscopic messengers that send information between your belly and your skin. Your skin may be receiving messages from your gut and you don’t even know it! Here are some of the most common signs your gut health is off:

Your Topicals Aren’t Performing

Slather on your serums and treatments all you want, but if you’re not getting the results you expected it might be time to dig a little deeper than skin-deep. Take note of any digestive system changes you’ve seen over the past while. Has your stomach been more bloated than usual? Has there been gas buildup that is making you uncomfortable? Or maybe your stool has looked different? These can all be signs that your gastrointestinal tract could use a little pick-me-up.

You’re Feeling (and Looking) Inflamed

Has your eczema or psoriasis been unusually persistent? While we will always recommend visiting your healthcare provider, we will let you in on a little secret that may help you better understand your body and help you make lifestyle changes that could naturally relieve your inflammation. The underlying cause of inflammatory skin conditions may be linked to food allergies or leaky gut syndrome. In fact, one study showed that people with rosacea symptoms are 13 times as likely to have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

What’s more, an unhappy gut can also result in a weakened immune system, which means a greater risk of skin inflammation (cue: redness and itching) and damage to the skin’s protective barrier. Taking the steps to uncover food allergies and sensitivities is necessary to feeling better.

Your Hair & Nails Aren’t Happy

Your small intestine (fun fact: small intestines usually measure around 22ft.!) plays a very big role in your digestive system and that role is to absorb all the goodness (aka nutrients) from your daily food intake. Malabsorption issues of the small intestine are common and can cause lackluster complexion and dull, brittle and lifeless hair and nails.

You’re Dealing with Elimination Frustration

Your liver sends processed chemicals to your bowels to be excreted, but if your bowels aren’t moving properly (as a result of an unhappy gut), toxins are retained in your body systems—including the lymphatics which sit just under the surface of your skin. When this happens, your skin attempts to pick up the slack by eliminating waste through your skin cells. And while it’s only doing its job, the outcome—dullness, pimples and acne—is far from ideal!
