Summer is here and it's time to enjoy the beautiful sunshine! But as much as we love to soak up the sun, it's important to protect our skin from harmful UV rays. With so many different types of sunscreen out there, it can be tough to know which one to choose. In this post, we'll break down what SPF actually means and why it's crucial to protect your skin. In order to help you make the best decision on sunscreen, I'm here to help you understand what it all means when it comes to SPF and why it's important to use.

There are two types of sun rays that can damage the DNA in your skin cells, UVB rays and UVA rays–Both types can damage the skin. But when it comes to SPF, the number primarily refers to the level of UVB protection provided. This is why experts (including our team here at Pure) recommend choosing broad spectrum sunscreens that offer protection from both UVB and UVA rays.

Here is a quick breakdown of how much protection you’re actually getting:

•  SPF 15 is giving you 93% UVB protection

• SPF 30 is giving you 97% UVB protection

• SPF 50 is giving you 98% UVB protection

What else should you know? Contrary to popular belief, the higher the number does not mean it lasts longer. All SPF’s only last about 2 hours before they need to be reapplied! We recommend using an SPF 30 or higher to help fight cellular damage from the sun and get the most protection for your skin.
